The Details I Notice Before a Home Ever Goes to Market

A Considered Approach to Preparing an East Bay Home

What do I notice before a home is photographed, styled, or introduced to the market?

Usually, it’s the little things.

When I first walk through a home, I’m not looking at it with a checklist in my hand. I’m taking it in. I’m noticing what feels beautiful, what feels distracting, what feels out of balance, and what might need just a little attention.

I NOTICE WHAT PULLS MY EYE AWAY

Sometimes a room is already lovely, but one thing keeps getting in the way.

It might be a light fixture that feels too small for the space. A piece of furniture that blocks the flow. A finish that no longer feels connected to the rest of the home.

I’m not looking for reasons to redo everything. I’m looking for the few things that may be keeping the home from showing as well as it could.

I NOTICE THE MOMENTS THAT DESERVE MORE ATTENTION

Every home has something.

Beautiful light. A great view. A fireplace. A courtyard. A long sightline through the house. A room that opens beautifully to the outdoors.

Those are the moments I want to protect and highlight. Sometimes that means changing the furniture placement. Sometimes it means removing something. Sometimes it means doing almost nothing at all.

I NOTICE WHEN LESS WOULD BE BETTER

This comes up often.

A room can be over-styled. A beautiful surface can disappear under too much decor. A home with strong architecture can lose some of its presence when too much is competing for attention.

There are times when the best thing we can do is simplify. That’s often where the elegance comes from.

I NOTICE WHAT BELONGS TO THE HOME

Not everything older needs to be replaced.

Sometimes an original detail, a material, a finish, or even a quirk is part of what gives a home its character.

I think it’s important to recognize that before making changes simply because something newer exists. The goal is never to make every home look the same.

THE TAKEAWAY

Before a home ever goes to market, I’m looking for the details that can either support the property or quietly work against it.

Sometimes the solution is a change. Sometimes it’s an edit. And sometimes it’s simply knowing when to leave something alone.

As Yasmine Austere, REALTOR® and Relocation Specialist, that’s one of my favorite parts of preparing a home for market, seeing what is already special and making sure it has room to come through.
